In 2020 in the midst of the global pandemic and as Melbourne experienced two separate extensive lockdowns - Flag Inc. conceived and began developing Corona Confessions, a project inviting and publishing Melburnians’ anonymous responses to the COVID19 pandemic and the harsh second-wave lockdown of winter/spring 2020. Eighteen little red post boxes were set in an array of inner northern locations – parks, fences, creekside paths, a pub windowsill and the front steps of a town hall – all placed to catch the eyes of curfew-bound Melburnians as they sought their hour’s daily exercise while limited to five kilometres of their homes. Submissions could also be made online, and were published on Flag Inc’s Instagram page. It was a strange and at-times grim few months for the city, but humour, tenderness and humanity were also reflected in the responses. Our aim was to compile a snapshot of the city’s collective hearts and minds. The next phase of the project is to work the responses into a live work and publication.
